The Medicine Hat Police Service is reminding drivers to prevent theft by securing motor vehicles. Theft of items from motor vehicles, including the vehicles themselves is ever prevalent in the hot summer season. It is estimated that auto theft costs Albertans $60 million a year in insurance claims. Auto theft costs the victim time and money, but costs society, because it drives insurance premiums up and many times stolen vehicles are used to commit other crimes. Here are some common items reported to police stolen from unlocked and open vehicles: -computer laptops, RADAR detectors, iPods, MP3 players, purses and wallets, shopping packages, loose money and change, iPads, compact discs, stereos systems, speakers, briefcases, tools, personal documents (for identity theft), cellular phones and even keys.
